How to buy Dragon Age: Origins

Maybe I'm alone but buying Dragon Age is pretty complicated.  There are standard editions, collectors editions and digital deluxe version.   You can buy it online or in stores and most of the time what you get is different.  Hopefully this post can help you decide how best to buy DA:O.

The best choice, in my opinion is to buy the Digital Deluxe version.  With this package you get:
  • Memory Band : Adds +1% to XP, Adds one skill point
  • Stone Prisoner DLC.  All retail and download versions include this.  Download versions will get the code emailed to them. LINK
  • Wardens Keep DLC:  Only Digital Deluxe versions get this.  Otherwise it will cost ~$7 to obtain. LINK
  • Blood Dragon Armor:  Included for all versions.
  • Bergen's Honor (item): A  helmet which adds  +2 to armor, +25 physical resistance, +6 to attack
  • Grimoire of the Frozen Wastes (item): A special book that adds +3 to all attribute
  • Final Reason (item): A magical staff of immense power which adds to damage, spell power, and fire damage
Each site has slighty different unique items to offer.
  • Direct2Drive: Dalish Ring Stats: Increased effectiveness of healing effects, Subtract damage from darkspawn attacks, Increase combat health regeneration. LINK
  • Steam:  The Wicked Oath (Ring): Adds +10% to critical strike damage , Improves armor penetration by 2 , Adds +1 to combat stamina regeneratio. LINK
  • EA Store: Band of Fire (Ring): Adds to Stamina, Adds to fire resist ,Adds to spirit resist. LINK
  • GameStop: No item listed.  LINK
  • GamersGate: No item listed. LINK
  • Impulse: No item listed. LINK
The big question for digital downloads is whether or not you can pre-load them before the release date.  If not you may not get to play on Tuesday.
  • Steam: Yes, starting November 1st sometime.  LINK
  • Direct2Drive: Yes, Novemember 1st at 10am PST. LINK
  • EA Store: Yes, Unknown when. LINK
  • GameStop: Unknown. LINK
  • GamersGate: No pre-load. LINK
  • Impulse: Unknown. LINK

Friday Black-Hole

Does it feel like a black-hole is stationed next to your cubical, slowing time down to a crawl?  Each second seems to take longer than the next.  Sure, you could buckle down and work, but who are we kidding?  The answer is out there, somewhere (like after the break).

For your time wasting needs, I offer you these links.

And I'm adding a new blog to my list this week...
So whatcha got planned for the weekend?  My plans include WAR, Torchlight and Fallen Earth.

WAR unveils a new Free Trial

In this months newsletter, Mythic announced that they have made some changes to their 10-Day Free trial.  At first the news worried me a little, but the more I thought about it, the better the idea sounded.  Once it goes live, it will be a great time to try out WAR.  Read on for more details.

"We’ll soon be lifting the 10-day restriction on our Free Trial! You'll be able to enjoy the trial experience and New User Journey for as long as you like!"

There you have it,  there will be no time limit on the free trial.  Instead, you are limited to the first tier.  I do have to admit, at first this made me think WAR might be in trouble.  However,  this really isn't all that different than the 10 day trial.

Getting to Rank 12 in 10 days is not very difficult, so I suspect many who play the trial and like it reach that limit.  By taking the 10 day restriction off of the trial, it gives everyone the time to get hooked.  Tier 1 is still a very fun experience.  I was playing my Rank 7 Slayer yesterday and there was plenty of action.  Multiple PQ's were being played and a lot of RvR was going on.

The quote in the newsletter is light on some details though.  Can you make as many classes as you want?  Can free trial players use the apprentice system?  Do buddy passes qualify as well?  I'm sure we'll get these answers soon.

While my first reaction was to worry, I think this is a very good idea for WAR.  The New User Journey and the fun of Tier 1 RvR should get players hooked and hopefully for Mythic, subscribed.  I don't think this new trial is active yet, but stay tuned.

Thanks to spinks for pointing this out to me.

Torchlight Video Review

Usually, I don't like to do game reviews.  One reason is I feel you cannot really sum up a game with a number.  Another is that often times it is hard to get a feel for how a game plays. For the new Action RPG, Torchlight, I decided to do a video review.  You can watch how the game plays while I talk about what it has to offer.

Direct Link.

To summarize the video, if you liked Diablo I/II then you should probably buy this game right now.  Even if you only sorta liked them, at $20 you will easily get your monies worth.  I was not a big Diablo guy, but I am enjoying Torchlight.  It is very easy to get into and play, even if you only have 10 minutes.

WAR comes to the Mac

That's right Mac users, Warhammer Online is now officially released for you.  If you want to check it out, head over here and download the trial version.  To remember the occasion, I threw together a quick commercial.  I do mean quick, so I apologize in advance for the quality ;)  Check it out after the jump.

What WAR can learn from Aion

Soon my time in Aion will come to an end.  As I expected, the game is just not for me.  It isn't a bad game and I did have some fun while playing.  Even though I won't be playing it, there are some things that WAR can learn and hopefully be an even better game.

First lets start with why I will not continue with Aion.  First and foremost is the nature of the leveling process.  I made it to level 28 and just could not climb the hill to 50 via the PvE route.  I really do prefer PvP leveling, but that isn't recommended in the Abyss.  I also did not dig the art style.  Both reasons are opinion based, so you may feel differently.

On to what WAR can learn from Aion.
  • Performance.  In normal situations (not 100+ player combat), Aion's combat is very smooth with very nice animations.  Even with WAR's 1.3.2 improvements, it still doesn't match Aion in the flow of combat.
  • Crafting.  I do like WAR's crafting philosophy of making stuff you can use.  Aion's crafting is the definition of grind, but it is much more broad than WAR.  I would love to see WAR keep their philosophy but expand the system.
  • Economy.  Aion has a thriving Auction House economy party due to their broad Crafting system.  In WAR, it is pretty easy to become self-sufficient.  That is a double edged sword as not counting on others is nice but it hurts the social nature of the game.
  • PvP.  In Aion it is perfectly reasonable for you, or you and a friend, to go out into the PvP area and do quests, farm stuff or look for trouble.  In WAR, that isn't really possible due to the nature of the RvR lakes.  It is made for groups or larger.  Sometimes players don't want to run in large groups.
Those are some of the things that WAR can learn from Aion.  They are both good games, but there is always room for improvement.

The truth about zombies

Fallen Earth tells it like it is.

Werit at WAR: Daemon Moon Rising

Most of my WAR playtime this week has involved the current Live Event, Daemon Moon Rising.  I think this has been one of the best Live Event's yet.  It has sparked quite a bit of RvR with the PQ and bringing the back High Pass Cemetery scenario.  See for yourself after the jump.

In this week's video we see the Event boss fight, fighting over the PQ and some action in High Pass Cemetery.  All of this was run at High graphic settings and was a lot of fun.

This particular event was very kind to me reward wise.  The Wild Hunt's elite reward eluded me due to vacation,  this time I did manage to reach it.  The Malleus Daemonarium is a temporary item for your characters event slot.  It expires when the next Live Event starts in 60 days.

I managed to win a gold (Massive) bag off of Goreslake the Bloodthrister, the big boss in the video.  Inside the bag was the Magnus Daemonarium.  This is also an event slot item, but expires in 14 days.  It is a bit better than the item from the Live Event.

Last but not least, we were able to siege the Inevitable City.  We didn't make it to stage 2, but we took out some of the Hero mobs who work there.  One of them was kind enough to give me a new cloak.

Overall I've had a great time in the event.  The High Pass Cemetery was a nice change of pace. Getting the Elite reward takes some time, but should be attainable by most players.  I'm leaving the masks you can wear for another post, but they were a neat idea too.

Action Points get Fixed

One of the long standing criticisms of WAR is that it require zero to little 'skill.'  I won't debate what 'skill' really means, as that is a whole a post in itself.  In this case, it comes down to just being able to SPAM abilities.  In 1.3.2, WAR has taken steps to fix this problem.

In this Dev Diary, Nate discusses a couple of fixes to the Action Point system.  Some bugs were introduced in earlier patches which gave players much more Action Point regeneration than they should have had.  As you can expect, this resulted in being able to SPAM abilities.

From my experience, the fixes are very noticeable.  Prior to 1.3.2 I really never gave Action Points a second thought.  I could usually fire all of my abilities at will with only the cooldowns slowing me.  Now I will run out of AP's if I don't pay attanetion.

This has also renewed my interest in Action Point saving skills, talismans and potions.  So really, this change may bring new life into a large segment of the game.  More elements to consider adds gameplay.

It is hard to tell how successful these fixes will be for other problems.  Bomb (PBaE) groups are still running around and  some attacks still get spammed.  Now that regen is fixed, changes to AP cost should go a long way in making the game more balanced.

Werit goes to GameX

Much to my surprise there was a video game conference close to where I live over the weekend.  It was called GameX and it was a developer conference plus an expo.  I've never been to a game conference before, so I drove over to check out the expo.

My first stop was at the EA Mythic Warhammer Online booth.  I met some of the staff (Hi James and Ben) and played a bit on their demo systems.  I was surprised they the characters were on live servers.  We talked for a little bit about the awesomeness of 1.3.2.  I did not leave the booth empty handed, they had a very cool Land of the Dead poster which I grabbed.

My next stop was at Hi-Rez Studio's Global Agenda area.  This is a game I have not posted much about, but have been following.  They had about a dozen systems setup, which were packed for the whole time I was there.  There really isn't much to say about it though, as it looks like a High Quality FPS.  The meta/alliance/rpg aspects are the interesting part but they really didn't get into it.

The Global Agenda folks did not have anything as cool as the WAR poster, but I did grab a button and enter for a chance to win a beta invite.  Also, I got a 'preferred beta registration card' that will supposedly give me priority.  We'll see about that.

Dante's Inferno was also present at GameX.  This is an action game, sorta like Gods of WAR.  The graphics on their test systems looked amazing.  Great animation and environments.  However the game is extremely graphic which was too over the top for me.  I don't think I'll be getting that title.

It was an interesting event.  It didn't have nearly as much going on game wise as the big cons, but I'll take what I can get.  There was a lot of other activities like Jedi role players, a rock band stage, robots battling it out and a Steampunk booth.  In the end though, the LoTD poster made it worthwhile.

Friday Time Accelerator

The weekend is almost here, but a long Friday at work stands in between.  You could pass the time by working... or you could do whatever you can to make it seem to fly by.  I'm a big fan of the latter, so I offer you these links.

My personal submissions...

I'd also like to recommend two new blogs.  These are both game blogs but are also pretty funny.
And if you are truly brave and want to play a game from wherever you are:
  • Dragon Age Journeys.  A flash game which lets you unlock items for the soon be released title, Dragon Age: Origins.

The Daemon Moon has Risen

The newest Live Event for WAR has begun.  It is a day early, but I'm not complaining.  This event has me pretty excited, so let's get to it.  You can find the task list and other info after the break.

First we have the task list.  It looks to have a pretty good variety.  Also getting the Elite reward should be doable.

And here are just some of the rewards...

Q&A with Soldak's Steven Peeler

Yesterday, we had a preview of Soldak's new game, Din's Curse.  I was able to catch up with its creator, Steven Peeler, and ask some questions. Thanks Steven!

Werit:  Please tell us a little about yourself and your new game, Din's Curse.

My name is Steven Peeler. I’m the owner of Soldak Entertainment, the lead designer of our games, and the only programmer over here.

Din’s Curse is our upcoming single player and co-op multiplayer action RPG with 141 class combinations, infinite number of dynamically generated towns, real consequences, and a dynamic, evolving world.

Werit:  Before Din's Curse there was Depths of Peril.  What influence did that have on Din's Curse?

Depths of Peril has quite a bit of influence on Din’s Curse. They are based in the same world, though Depths of Peril shows more of the barbarian side of things. Din’s Curse also is using the same dynamic world that Depths of Peril uses. We have expanded this system a lot though.

Werit:  One of the first things that jumped out at me was Din's class system.  It says there are 141 class combination's, which should allow for quite a bit of replay value.  What are some of your favorite combination's?

I don’t have a favorite quite yet since I’m not in the heavy play testing phase and there are a lot of combinations to test. However, a Warlock Defender is fun. Who wouldn’t want to play a character that can wield good weapons, wear plate armor, and summon demons?

Another interesting combo is a Fire Mage Healer who can rain down destruction on everyone and heal himself when something actually manages to live through his deadly assault. I’m really hoping everyone can find a combination that fits their unique play style and they will just love.

Werit:  Dynamic and changing worlds seem to be a hallmark of both Depths of Peril and Din's Curse.  What are some examples of how the world can be different from game to game?

Well I see this as being two different things: a random world start and a dynamic world.

Each world is going to start out very different. There will be different NPCs in town and each town will have unique problems (starting quests). The dungeons will look very distinct every time and have a unique layout. The placement of items, objects, and monsters will also be changed each time.

Even if you somehow got two people to start with the same world, it will evolve separately based on what the player does, what the monsters do, and what the NPCs do. Let’s say the world starts off with an uprising of Imps. The first person takes it seriously, goes down into the dungeon, and quells the uprising. The second person decides to ignore the uprising.

Eventually this will blow up in their face. The consequence will never be the same exactly, but here’s an actual possible scenario. The Imps get restless and decide to go to war with the Zombies. Ok, Zombies and Imps killing each other doesn’t sound like a bad thing, not yet at least. Then the Zombies drag the Skeletons into the war also, still not a problem. Now an uprising of Skeletons and two different Zombie uprisings occur.

Now the problems are building. The Imps are no match for the Zombies and Skeletons together and are beaten into submission and the war ends. Soon after though, the Zombies get bored and start raiding the town. The player finally returns from their adventure to find that all of the NPCs in town are now undead.

Werit:  Many RPG's tout choices as a big feature, but often they don't really have much of an impact.  How does Din's Curse give meaning to a players actions and choices?

I kind of went overboard with the last quest and answered this one already. Basically in Din’s Curse if someone says hurry up and do something or bad things will happen, you should actually pay attention because they are telling you the truth.

Werit:  With such a dynamic world, how do you keep everything from feeling disjointed?  Are there still 'epic' storylines or just one shot quests?

There are no epic storylines or one shot quests exactly. How it works is that each quest has the possibility of branching out to many other quests. Things basically flow from one quest to another just like an epic storyline, except the difference is that which branch is taken is based on the actions of the player, monsters, and NPCs.

Werit:  Are there any plans to allow players to mod the game or add content?

All of our games are pretty easily modified. Most of the data is in simple text files. This way it is easy to change and expand. With each game, I push more and more of the data out of the code so it’s more modifiable.

Werit:  Will Din's Curse have any kind of online component or multiplayer?

Our goal is to have co-op multiplayer similar to what we did with our Kivi’s Underworld expansion. This time it should be in the main game though instead of an expansion.

Werit:  When will we be able to get our hands on Dins Curse?

I’m still hoping to finish sometime in late fourth quarter of this year.

Werit:  Anything else you would like to tell the readers about Din's Curse?

We always welcome ideas so if anyone reading this has any interesting ideas on what they would like to see in Din’s Curse feel free to join in discussions on our forums.

We also have two cool games already out there people could enjoy right now: Depths of Peril (a unique action RPG with warring factions and a dynamic world) and Kivi’s Underworld (a casual hack and slash game with 20+ classes).

Fallen Earth Freebies

Another 3 post day, I'm turning into Syp.  I just can't help myself though, there is so much game stuff to talk about!  Out of nowhere, an email from the Fallen Earth team arrived.  It was a nice coincidence as I was in game catching up on my crafting.

To show their appreciation, they are giving players 5 Clone Supercharge Shots.  These buffs give +10  to all stats for an hour and persist through death.

They also announced another addition to their Days of the Dead event.  All subscribers will get a Troopers Gas mask on Halloween.   It is a Level 10 item with a very low Armor use requirement of 9.  Heck, my Farmers Hat takes 21 points.

 Great stuff, thanks Fallen Earth!

Re-Enlist in WAR

Are you tired killing that same old monster over and over again?  Do you want to take out your frustrations on others?  Have an urge to yell WAAAGH?  If you do, now may be a good time to give WAR a chance.  There are a number of reasons why.

Patch 1.3.2 has arrived  and brought with it a number of improvements.  Performance is better than ever.  Battles with hundreds of combatants are very playable.  Along with it, the game looks much better.  Crowd control has been brought ... under control.  The new stagger effect places an emphasis on tactics instead of spamming.

The war now bypasses the fortresses.  This means you will have more shots at progressing your items through the city fights.  So far it really adds more variety into your playtime.  On the downside, it seems city sieges are occurring a bit too frequently on some servers.

This weekend (October 23rd) the latest Live Event starts, Daemon Moon Rising.  It includes a lot of Halloween viole... fun.  There is a unique PQ called Daemonball Rally, which puts you in direct competition with your enemies.  Defeat them and you win the spoils.

What would Halloween be without masks?  During the event you can collect masks form possessed npc's and turn them in for a special Event mask.  This mask can come with any one of a number of special powers.  The High Pass Cemetery scenario will also be open to all tiers during the event.

Let's not forget about the treats.  From your enemies, you can collect the mask rewards from last years Halloween event.  The normal Event rewards include bonus Damage/healing/XP/renown, and 2 special masks for your event slot.

That's not all!  There is a special talisman drop which can be used in crafting.  There is also a boss, Bloodthirster of the Chaos Wastes, to defeat.

That is just a few things going on with WAR this week.  While the game is certainly not perfect,  there is a lot of fun to be had.  If you are new to WAR, it is a good time to check out the Free Trial.

Din's Curse Preview

Action RPG's, such as the ever popular Diablo, tend to be relatively simple hack and slash games.  Soldak Entertainment is taking them to a whole new level.  In their upcoming Action RPG, Din's Curse, they bring a dynamic and meaningful game world to the genre.

Soldak is quite familiar with the genre. Their first title, Depths of Peril, was very popular.  One of its unique aspects was that you competed against other NPC adventure factions to see who would rule the city.  Eventually you fight them, as well as taking on dungeons.

The first area which sets Din's apart is the character creation.   You don't just choose a class archetype and be on your way.  Instead Din's uses a hybrid skill system that gives the player around 141 class options.  That should add some nice replay value.

Speaking of replay value, Din's Curse offers it in spades.  The entire game world is recreated with each new game.  This is much more than just dynamic dungeon layouts.  You never know which monsters, items, npc's and quests will be waiting for you.

Choice is another important aspect of Din's Curse.  A lot of RPG's say that choices matter, but in the end they don't .  In this game, the choices you make can have a profound impact on the game world.  For example, if you don't rescue that npc, they will die.  Whatever quests  they may have offered will be gone.

In Din's Curse, you will have to think about where you are fighting.  If you (or monsters) are tossing around powerful spells you may actually cause a cave-in or explosion.  These, of course, are also different from game to game.  Don't forget about traps and treasure room's, they are here too.

Last but not least, multiplayer.  Their previous game, Kivis Underworld, did have a multiplayer expansion.  That means it is certainly a possibility with Din's Curse.

Din's Curse is looking to take the traditional Action RPG one step further.  It has all of the standard features, but wraps a truly dynamic world around them.  The game is currently in development, but you can follow along using their forums or blog.

Dawntide Giveaway UPDATE

All the invites for the Dawntide Beta Giveaway have been sent out.  Be sure to check your SPAM boxes just in case.  Thanks to everyone who sent in a request.  If you missed it or did not get an invite, be sure to register at Dawntide's Beta Center

2 weeks, 3 games

Is it almost November already?  It seems like I was just talking about the huge MMO month of September.  Not to be outdone, October and November are teaming up to bring us the launch of 3 new games.  While they are not MMO's, they definetly deserve your attention.

Dragon Age: Origins.  This would be the heavyweight of the bunch.  A Bioware RPG, need I say more?  I've had the Collectors Edition on pre-order for a while now.  So yea, I'll be playing this when it comes out.  Can you guess which character?

You can expect to lose a lot of time starting November 3rd.

Borderlands.  A gazillion guns.  That is all the advertising they need.  If you are still not sure, watch this video. Mainstream'd.  Despite the guns and awesome video I am on the fence with Borderlands.  You see, co-op play is a heavily touted feature, which is great for those popular people.  Me, I'm a loner.  Actually, my schedule just makes finding folks to play with tough.

Borderlands starts shootin... today on the 360/PS3.  The PC version is out the 26th.

Torchlight.  This one may be the surprise hit.  It's an action RPG game that looks like an AAA production.  However, it only costs about $18.  That is the cost of one trip to the movies.  I'm pretty sure you will get many more hours out of this than whatever let down film you just watched.  Check out a video.  I've got this bad boy pre-ordered.

Releases on the PC October 27th, from digital distribution sites.

Dawntide Beta Key Giveaway

Dawntide is a new sandbox style MMO which is currently in its 2nd beta phase.  Some of the main features are: Skill based, Open World, SWG-like crafting, sailing and town building.  I happen to have a number of beta keys to give out, sound interesting?

In order to help give you an idea about the world of Dawntide I put together a short video.  This is just the first in a series of videos I have planned.  Be sure to watch it in HD and if possible, with sound.

Direct Link.

For some more info on Dawntide, check out an interview with the Producer.

Before we get to the beta keys, you should know what you are getting yourself into.
  • This is an early beta.  Many of the games features are still in the process of being implemented.
  • There is no hand holding or rails.  One of the goals of Dawntide is for the game to be played without an 'epic loot' carrot.
  • The developers like feedback and bug reports, so give it to them :)
  • This is an early beta.  It bears repeating in order to keep expectations in check.
  • There is no NDA, so feel free to talk about it with whomever.
NOTE:  I am out of keys, invites will be sent out soon.  Sadly I ran out, so a few may not get one.  You can always apply for the beta.  Getting involved on their forums also helps your chances.

Days of the Dead

Fall is upon us and that means the start of MMO holiday event season.  Fallen Earth is launching their first event, Days of the Dead, just in time for Halloween.   Most holiday events are pretty lackluster to me, but I am excited about this one.

First, let's go over the big news that goes along with this event.  Multiple gaming sites will be handing out Free 15-day Trial keys!  Now you can see what all of the Fallen Earth talk is about for yourself.  I hope they also go the route of giving their subscribers trial keys to hand out to friends.

The event itself has a simple premise, Kill Zombies.  You pick up zombie killing missions and go to work.  Once you kill 100 of them, you can get yourself a special zombie killing weapon.  You have the choice of a signature shotgun, a sawed-off shotgun or a cricket bat.  Hmm, one of these is not like the others.

Now, I'm sure smashing zombies with a cricket bat is fun and all, but it seems a bit out of place.  How many cricket players live around the Grand Canyon? Perhaps our FE players in Europe will enjoy it.   I'm going to be going with a shotgun.  This is an event reward I must have.

And we can't forget about the "Pumpkin of Extraordinary Merit."  This fine vegetable provides you with a stat buff... and it is a pumpkin.  That is the important part.  I can't help but think of the Great Pumpkin from the Peanuts cartoon.  Did I mention you can make scarecrows?

If you have been curious about Fallen Earth be sure to keep your eyes out for the trial keys.  A list can be found here.  Those of you who currently play, hands off my pumpkins!

Werit at WAR 10/19

In this week's 'Werit at WAR' segment I decided to try something new.  As I'm on a video kick, I recorded some of the action I saw this weekend.  Most of the clips end up with me dying though.  I also made up a new title sequence, so let me know what you think.

Direct Link.

I played a fair amount and had a lot of fun.  Spreading my time across multiple characters is what works for me now, so why fight it.  My Ironbreaker, Hoplon, is only 30 but still pretty fun to play.  Badlands did suffer multiple city sieges, but I only saw the tail end of one.

Despite reports of lag in the city, I had no issues running at High settings.  It seems like the performance we saw on PTS is indeed carrying over to the live servers.   I'm looking forward to the Daemon Moon Event this week so expect some coverage of that too.

Werit Gets Owned

Three posts, on a Friday?  I know, it is a bit out of the ordinary.  To celebrate Friday and the release of the 1.3.2 patch I have another video for you.  This time it is of my character, Tirew, getting demolished in a fight.
Enjoy!

This video was taken on the live servers (1.3.2) with graphics set to High.

Direct Link

The Disciple of Khaine who tore me up is an old enemy.  I think we have been fighting against each other since the original server of Averheim. This round goes to him, but there will be a next time.

Producer's Letter - What was missing

The Producer's Letter released yesterday was pretty good.  It will be a much needed patch even if it doesn't get players all excited.  There are a few things that I would have loved to seen in the letter.  Hopefully they will be realized in an upcoming patch.

Fortresses.  Now that fortress are out of the city campaign, they don't really have a purpose.  Mythic has hinted they have some ideas for them, but still no word about what they are.

Small Group Content.  This is perhaps the biggest issue for me.  There is really nothing for 1 - 3 players to do in the RvR lakes.  There are many times where I don't want to run in a warband but there is no alternative.

Land of the Dead.  If you remove the gated nature of the LotD, you may be able to solve the above issue.  Also, I hope this gets a pass in the bug and polishing effort.

Expansion.  I don't even want concrete details.  An  indication that one is coming will give players something to look forward to.  Expansions are exciting, well at least to me they are.

So that is my short list of things I wanted to hear about in the Producer's Letter.

WAR Producer's Letter

Yesterday, the much anticipated 1.3.2 patch was released on the live servers.  Along with the patch, we also got another Producer's Letter which outlines the current and future plans for the game.  What does Mythic have in store?

The first part of the letter goes over what the development team accomplished in the 1.3.2 patch.  Included were the: New User ExperienceApprenticeship System, bypassing fortresses and performance enhancements.  These are all well and good, but we want to know what's next!  Jeff, the producer, did not disappoint.

Next up for WAR is 1.3.3, which Jeff describes as focusing on 'Bugs and Polish.'  While that isn't the most exciting concept, I believe it is a great idea.  Now that performance is where it should be, it is time to take a look at the rest of the game and bring it up to spec.  Some specific examples were given in the letter.

Walk and sit animations.  I never realized that WAR lacked these.  While they don't do much for me, they should add some overall flavor to the game.  You can never go wrong with more immersion.

UI Fixes.  WAR's UI is pretty good, but there are some nagging issues likes timers not syncing up. It would be nice to get those out of the way.

Graphics enhancements.  At first I didn't think this was necessary.  Performance is much improved now, wouldn't upgrading the graphics be a step back?  However, these videos changed my mind: WAR with HDR, WAR with Bloom.

Pet and monster pathing.  This will probably be most appreciated by the pet classes.  For me, it probably means more effective Squigs.

Underdog system.  Details about their proposed underdog system were revealed.  I will save my thoughts for a separate post.

Hunter's Vale.  The Live Event dungeon is back and here to stay.  Entrances can be found in Tier 1, so low level players can experience it.  A lot of people liked this instance, so it is a great idea to make it permanent.

Overall, it was a good letter.  A bug fixing and polishing patch is just what WAR needs.  If I could make one suggestion, it would be to release the fixes once a week rather than at the and of the patch cycle.  It would keep players much happier to see a steady stream of bug fixes.

WAR Siege Video 1.3.2 Part 2

In Part 1 of the 1.3.2 PTS Siege Event we saw Order on the offensive.  Performance was very good, but the video did not really show the true scale of the Destruction force.  In Part 2,  Order is defending the keep.  This actually happened prior to the first part.  Did performance hold up inside the keep?

In this video, my graphics were set for Fastest Framerate.  There is no real reason why, other than being curious how it would run.  In Part 1 we saw that WAR ran well at Balanced settings.  You will notice some lag when Destruction leaves their warcamp.  It only lasts for a few seconds.

Direct Link.

Overall the performance was very good in the keep.  It is nice to at least be able to see the wrecking ball of Destruction about to hit me.   I do wish I had tried out the High settings, maybe I'll do that on the live servers.

Patch 1.3.2 will hit live servers today!

The specs of the recording system are:

Windows 7 x64
2.66ghz Quad Core
4gb RAM
8800GT video card
7200 rpm HD for game
128gb SSD for Fraps output

WAR Siege Video 1.3.2

As I mentioned in the last post, I took 60 gig worth of video from last nights PTS event.  I think this does a good job of showing just how far WAR's performance has come.  My graphics were set to Balanced and I was using Fraps to record.  Over 250 players participated and still the video came out pretty good.  Check it out after the break.

NOTE: Part 2 is up!

If you manage to watch the video until the end, you will see Order get trounced.  Pretty creative on their part, thankfully it was only on PTS.  Not all of the graphic effects fire when in a high traffic situation.  This is probably for the best, as it would quickly overwhelm the client.

Direct Link.

At times, it felt like we were on a trampoline because the siege weapons were knocking us around.  This is a known bug which will hopefully be fixed before the patch goes live.  Not that is a big deal, who can afford those Ordinance weapons?

I have another video of Order defending, hopefully I'll get that up soon.

EDIT:  Here are the stats for the recording system...

Windows 7 x64
2.66ghz Quad Core
4gb RAM
8800GT video card
7200 rpm HD for game
128gb SSD for Fraps output

1.3.2 Impressions

Last night, Mythic held a PTS event to test their performance improvements.  The goal was to get a whole bunch of people attacking a very well defended keep and see how it holds up.  Over 250 players ended up fighting over the keep. How did WAR do?

NOTE:  Check out the video of the siege
NOTE:  Part 2 of the Siege Video is up.

I came away from the event extremely impressed.  The game was 100% playable even with hundreds of people fighting within a small area.  There was little to no lag.  At first I started using the Fastest Framerate graphics setting.  As that worked great, I switched it over to Balanced.  To my surprise it was still very playable.

I know what you're saying, it was only on a test server.  While that is true, they have done these performance tests before.  I think the last one I attended was for 1.3.  Similar numbers were present and the game was very laggy.  It was no where near as smooth as last night.  They have made significant progress with WAR's performance.

Words can only describe the performance so much, which is why I took some video.  Actually, I took a lot of video, 60 gigs worth.  Thanks to my new SSD drive (used for Fraps output) and WAR's improvements, I could run fraps without causing the game to stutter at my best resolution.  I'm still thinking about how to present the video.  I could just post it all, but it would take 3 separate videos.  Alternatively, I could edit it down to a single 10 minute video.

Along with performance, WAR's graphics got an upgrade as well.  Changes to their texture manager have the game looking better than ever.  Yesterdays PvP video shows some of the changes.  I plan on doing a separate post about it soon.

Overall it was a fun event.  WAR's performance seems to have improved by leaps and bounds. There was still a little lag at times and some small hitching.  The feedback during the game and on the forums is surprisingly positive as well.  Hopefully these changes will stick and they can devote more time to other areas of WAR.

WAR PvP video 1.3.2

In preparation of tonight's PTS event for WAR, I logged in to get all patched up.  After patching I thought I'd look around and see what was going on.  The map showed some action in Reikland so that seemed like a good place to start.  I took some video of the fight, it's after the break.

Mythic is touting some performance improvements in this patch and it looks like they are right.  During the battle my FPS didn't drop below 50.  Of course, this isn't a large scale conflict, but it was smooth none the less.  The responsiveness of the actions was also very nice.  Coming from Aion, I expected to notice some sort of lag, but I did not.

Direct Link

Tonight's event should be the real performance test.  I'm not expecting miracles but I hope it is a bit better.  Let's face it, large scale battles are a very tough problem.  Even in Aion, players lag and crash when large numbers are fighting at the same spot.

Looking good Mythic!

Fallen Earth Tips - Auction House

It is good to know that commerce has survived the apocalypse.  The zones in Fallen Earth are big... really big, so it can be a bit of a pain to find things.  This weeks tip reveals the location of the Auction House in Sector 1.  Hop on your horse or ATV and load up your junk as there are chips to be made.  Check out the video after the jump.

Direct Link.

The Auction House can be found on the outskirts of Embry Crossroads, a barter town.  It is pretty much the hub of all Sector 1 activity and can get pretty crowded.  If you are looking for something to buy or sell, this is the place to do it.

Kindle vs Sony Reader

I saw a commercial for the new Sony Reader which said it started at $199.  As a Kindle user my curiosity was peaked due to the low price.  Amazon recently lowered the Kindle 2's price to $249 and this was even cheaper.  So I set off to find out why it was so 'cheap.'

The 'starting at' was the first major clue.  That usually means there are several different models.  A quick trip over to Sony Style confirmed that this was for their Reader Pocket Edition.  So how does this compare to the Kindle?

Wireless.  The Reader Pocket edition does not come with wireless capabilities while the Kindle does.

Formats.  The Pocket Reader supports ePub, Word, PDF's and others.  The Kindle supports Amazons proprietary format and PDFs.

Books.  The Pocket reader can use Sony's eBook Store and Google Books.  The Kindle uses Amazons store.

Display.  Both devices use an eInk display.  The Kindle has a 6in screen while the Reader has a 5in screen.

Those are the major differences between the two devices.  The lack of wireless is a big drawback for me but may not be for others.  I really like that I can check my mail and RSS feeds with the Kindle from anywhere for free.

Rest assured, Sony will be putting out a wireless capable Reader in a few months.  The price has not been announced, but I expect it to be at least $300.

Hoarders - The MMO

I was watching the A&E show, Hoarders and couldn't help but think of MMO's.  If you're not familiar with the show, it is about people who cannot throw anything away.  Their homes and yards end up turning into junk yards.  In real life it turns out to be a very serious problem, but in MMO's it is standard fare.

I definitely have a hoarding problem in MMO's.  Everything I loot or gather I want to save.  It doesn't matter what it is, if it isn't grey then it usually gets put away for later.  Even if I am max level, my bank will still be filed with early game items.  Sure, I could probably easily buy them again, but you never know.

Fallen Earth really takes advantage of my hoarding nature.  It is one of the games main features.  There are a ton of things to loot and gather and they all have good uses.  Since chips (money) are hard to come buy, you really do want to save what you find.

Star Wars Galaxies could easily have an in-game version of Hoarders.  With their housing system, you can place any object you find in the game inside your home.  If there weren't limits, I think there would be plenty of homes that look like this.

Dawntide: And so it begins

Dawntide has entered phase 2 of its beta.  With some luck, a bribe and a sacrifice or two I was granted access.  Since they don't use a NDA I can freely talk about (and show) my experiences.  It should be pretty fun to document its development. Oh and of course help them find bugs :)

Some of the graphics are very nice, much better than I was expecting for a beta.  I especially like the water and sky.  For more articles about Dawntide, click on the tag.

You may still be able to get into this round of testing, head over to their beta center

WAR for Everyone

Another one of the features coming to WAR in the 1.3.2 patch is an apprenticeship system.  Due to the always entertaining chicken system, higher ranked players are forbidden from participating in lower tier RvR.  It also isn't feasible for lower ranked players to participate in higher tier RvR.  With this new system,  all of that should now be possible.

The 1.3.2 patch is shaping up to be quite a change for WAR.  Currently,  players are pretty much restricted to the tiers that they are in.  Playing with people makes WAR a lot more exciting and apprentice system will go a long way to making this the case all of the time.

"The new Apprentice system allows players of differing Ranks to play together, whether battling it out in RvR or aiding your Realm's war effort in quests and Public Quests. Just click on another player's portrait in the group or Warband window and choose the "Make Apprentice" option, and that player will be scaled to your Rank, no matter whether they're a higher or lower Rank than you are."

Many apprentice/mentoring systems only allow higher ranked players to lower themselves, but not WAR.  They will allow lower ranked players to also be raised.  That is what has me the most excited.  When I'm playing my alts, I don't really care much about the current tiers RvR.  What does it matter?  I just want to get to tier 4 where the real action is.

There is one aspect of the system that is disappointing.  It seems that players will not be able to queue for scenarios unless they are available at their original rank.  If the scaling is done correctly, then I'm not sure why this should be disallowed.  It could be that the scaled players provide an unfair advantage or disadvantage to the team.

Despite the scenario issue, I expect this system to be a boon for players.  Allowing everyone to play together across the game will be great for morale.  If there is some good RvR in Tier 2, anyone can get involved so long as they can get in the a group.

I wonder what long term effects this will have on the game.  Eventually they could make lower tiered lands useful for higher ranked players similar to what Everquest 2 is doing.  If they removed the group requirement, it would be a step towards getting rid of levels completely.

NOTE:  It seems Mythic is holding off on the downward apprenticing.  Players are worried that it will be abused by organized Tier 4 players.  There is also a concern about it taking action away from Tier 4.  It's tough to predict one way or the other in my opinion.  However, taking things slow with a new idea is usually a good idea.  Thanks Rad.

Q&A with GSB's Cliff Harris

Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with Cliff Harris, the creator of Gratuitous Space Battles.  If you are not familiar with the game, be sure to check out the video preview.  GSB is all about designing your fleet, giving them orders and then watching the carnage that unfolds. Thanks Cliff!

Werit:  Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your new game?

I'm cliff harris, most people call me cliffski. I used to be a programmer working at Lionhead, and I left there to set up my own little one-man games company. I've been doing that for quite a few years, doing games like Kudos and Democracy, but my latest game is a space strategy game called 'Gratuitous Space Battles'. It's a new take on the whole war-game genre, because it's all about planning and strategy, rather than fast reflexes and direct control of your forces.

Werit:  With GSB, you are going about the release a bit differently by allowing pre-orders into the beta. I like the idea, as I bought it. What led you to go about it this way?

I think my games get better as I continue to work on them, so the initial 'release' is never as good as the 14th or 15th patch. People always find bugs, or suggest cool improvements, and you end up with a better game that is more focused on what gamers want. I thought I might as well build that post-release improvement process right into the development of the game this time. I was also impressed with how games like Dwarf Fortress and Mount & Blade have this ongoing dialog with their players, I thought that would always lead to better games.

Werit:  How is it working out so far?

Very well. there are a bunch of people playing the beta, and I've had a huge chunk of really helpful feedback and some excellent ideas. The game is already miles better in every way than when I first opened up the beta, and the trickle of pre-order cash means I'm less panicked about wanting to rush the game finished, which is good news.

Werit:  GSB has a rather unique form of multiplayer. You've mentioned before that it is similar to PBeM's which, by the way, I used to be obsessed with.  How does it work and what has been the feedback so far?

Players can fight against AI fleets, and to do this they must design ships and arrange them into formations with orders for battle. The amount of data involved there is actually fairly small in hard-drive terms, so its easy for me to have a system where you can just upload the whole thing to my server. Because both sides in a battle are equal, that means that the players fleets can serve as the enemy fleets for each other. People have really loved this, because if they are really good at the game, they might be able to beat all the AI fleets, but they have a tough time beating everyone else who is playing. Some incredibly crafty and clever strategies and fleets have emerged during the beta, which is great to see.

Werit:  I've read that GSB is mod-able by the players.  How much of the game can be altered?  Is it just ship models?

Almost anything. People have added new weapons, new ship components and hulls, and backdrops and pretty much everything. of course, that won't work if you try to send your modded fleet as a challenge to someone else, but it's great fun. people are already converting the game to look and play how they want.

Werit: What's the largest battle you have had going in game?

I think the chaos nebula battle is the largest one. I have done some tests with thousands of ships on each side, and it worked ok on my PC, but the game is designed to run on older PC's too, so I didn't include anything really over the top. When you see a battle with 200 ships on each side, with lasers and debris and escape pods and missiles... it's already amazingly complex and gratuitous and full of explosions. beyond that it can get a little bit silly :D

Werit: Any chance you will wrap a 4x game around it someday?

Possibly. Who knows? I did a very complex government simulation game for years (Democracy 2) so I'm clearly quite into doing turn based strategy stuff. I can see how it could make a really good meta game.

Werit: As GSB is technically in beta (but very playable) it is constantly evolving.  What can we expect to see in the near future?

It really depends on player feedback. There has been a lot of balancing, and a lot of good ideas. I'm experimenting with a few minor UI improvements right now. I'll also be taking a look at improving the challenge system, for seeing how your challenges do, and I'd like to get some more ship components in there too, especially for frigates and fighters.

Werit: You've developed a number of games.  Is there anything you're especially proud of when it comes to GSB?

I like the look of it a lot. For ages I did turn-based stats-heavy strategy games, and people just assumed I was rubbish at graphics, so this is my long-winded way of saying that I can do graphics programming too :D

Werit:  Anything else you would like to tell the readers about GSB?

Buy it. It's awesome! and my cats need feeding.

Daily Quests for WAR

A commenter on my WAR's New Beginning post raised an interesting question.  If new players are being funneled into Empire/Chaos lands, what will happen to all of those Public Quests?  It would be a shame for them to go unused.

One of the new features in the 1.3.2 patch is

Gratuitous Space Battles - Video Preview

Gratuitous Space Battles (GSB) is a new title from the one man programming band, Positech Games.  The best way to describe it would be to take Master of Orion (or Space Empires), pull out the ship design and tactical combat and then build a game around them.   As the name suggests, you end up with some very cool (and large) space battles.

If you pre-order the game you are able to download the current beta version.  I ended up doing that a few weeks ago, so I thought I'd put together a video preview for the game.  Check it out after the jump.

NOTE: Check out a Q&A with the creator.

Direct Link.

As you can see, GSB is in a very playable state.  It almost feels like a MMO, as it is still evolving with regular patches and additions from the developer.   The game is mod-able, so I can't wait to see some Star Wars and Star Trek additions.  Does this mean we can finally settle the age old question of who would win in a fight,  the Enterprise or a Star Destroyer?

WAR's New Beginning

One of the new changes coming to WAR Patch 1.3.2 is a revamp of the new user experience.  As it stands now, new players will start in their racial pairing, of which there are 3.  This is not in itself a bad idea, for a PvE game.  Multiple starting areas are usually a must when PvP is not a concern.

In a PvP focused game like WAR, it is important to get a player into the action as soon as possible.  They succeeded in doing this with their Scenarios, but failed to with the world RvR.  For an uninformed player, they may go out into the Ekrund RvR area and find it pretty empty.  Meanwhile the RvR is really going on in the Empire/Chaos pairing.

The changes for the new patch are:

* All new characters that join the Realm of Destruction will now begin the game in the Chaos starting area, no matter their race.
* All new characters that join the Realm of Order will now begin the game in the Empire starting area, no matter their race.
* A new voiceover tutorial will introduce the basic concepts of gameplay in WAR.
* The content and quest flow of both Realms' starting areas has been revised and improved to provide a greater gameplay experience.
* New players will automatically be placed in a 'new player guild', one for each Realm, to facilitate communication among those new to the game, or those who are rolling up an alt character, and to make finding a group a bit easier.
* The in-game help manual has been completely revised and updated to be more useful, more accessible, and more current.

Starting players off in the same zone should get them involved in the best part of WAR, RvR, pretty early.  When I start an alt, I head directly to the Empire RvR area as that is where the action is.  The other starting areas will still be there for that who want to use them.  Sounds like a win for everyone.

The introduction of a new player guild is another good idea.  This should really help promote playing with oters, which is essential to the RvR experience.  I would also hope they have a GM logged into the guild to help guide new players when needed.  The appearance of personal attention can only make players feel more welcome.

While changes to the new user experience may not be flashy they are necessary to the long term viability of the game.  This is just one part of the 1.3.2 changes, which are on PTS right now.  For even more information, check out this Developer Diary

Rifts

One of the more interesting concepts in Aion are the Rifts.  These portals allow for limited PvP in zones outside of the Abyss.  Over the last couple days I've had a chance to play with them.  They provide a bit of spice to an otherwise bland PvE experience.

A Rift is a unidirectional portal to an opposing factions zone.  So once it opens for your faction, only you may enter it.  You won't see the enemies coming through it.  They appear and disappear about every two hours, so their duration is not very long.  You'll often see a message in your chat log like: "A rift connected to Asmodae has appeared."  Usually there is 2-3 rifts open at a time between the zones.

Not all of the zones in Aion have Rifts.  The ones that do are:  Morheim, Beluslan, Eltnen and Interdiktah.  The rest of the zones are PvE only.  The Abyss, of course, is a PvP zone.

The above map shows the rift spawning locations for Morheim while the one below shows Eltnen.  They will appear at one of the listed locations randomly.  This is a very nice idea, as it prevents camping of the portal site.  On the downside, the locations of your portals can be difficult to find.

The portals are similar to the wormholes of Eve.  They only allow a certain number of players through them before they collapse.  This number is small ( 20 or less) and can vary between rifts.  It should prevent any massive incursions.  It also means you can easily get cut off from your group.

If you perish while in your enemies territory, you will respawn at your bind point unless you are resurrected.  Some enterprising raiders may choose to bring a mobile kisk in order to have a longer stay.  These mobile bind points allow you to rez anywhere you place it.  They can be destroyed and expire eventually, so they won't allow for a permanent stay.

So why use a rift?  To harass those pretty boy Elyos is usually a good enough reason.  You will gain Abyss Points from any player kills too.  There are also a number of quests you can do in your opposing factions territory.  They are often labeled with the SPY tag.

Rifts are a great diversion during your push to the Abyss.  While they add some excitement to the PvE gameplay , the controls (duration, randomness, limits) prevent them from being too disruptive.

The maps were found here.

Daemon Moon Rising

Live Events have always been one of the great features of Warhammer Online. Yesterday they spilled the beans on the next one which is called Daemon Moon Rising. Is that the moon that just hangs out in the background? Is it too early for a computer joke?

Check out the details and a video after the jump. I am experimenting with using page jumps, so if you love them or hate them, let me know.

Mythic really seems to have gone all out for this event, which is saying something since the Hunters Vale live event was excellent.  The event takes place from October 23rd to November 2nd. It seems to be replacing the Witching Night event, which was also one of my favorites.

Masks are back, but this time each one will grant the wearer a special power.  No hint about what kinds of powers, but they said it should be useful in combat.  In addition to new masks, players can get a new Event slot item.

What would an live event be without some RvR?  Daemon Moon Rising introduces a new RvR public quest called Daemonball Rally.  There is a ball in a central location and each side has to return it to their drop off point.  There is an added twist, you can throw the ball to a teammate.  This will be available Empire/Chaos zones.

And finally, they are opening up the High Pass Cemetery to all tiers.  There will be no shortage of things to do with this live event.  Mark Davis, the Live Event lead, did a video podcast for the occasion.
